Lab Building, Ghana; by Charles Hood

ARTISTIC STATEMENT: "One thing about this site that interested me was the inherent contradiction. Here was a field station built to study butterflies in the rain forest, and yet that same forest was already reclaiming the buildings set up to study it. We think of science as being precise, numerical, and, above all, tidy. Here are gorgeous flowers and a romantic ruin of a building --- perhaps it is a site memorializing failed science, or an example of science whose voodoo power wasn't quite proof against the world? As the bumper stickers used to say, 'Nature Bats Last.'"
