Osmosis Series, by Francesca Samsel

"The graphics of Francesca Samsel deal with fundamental laws of nature. They carry an aura of certainty and timelessness. In capturing the nuances of the many forms, Samsel presents the infinite beauty in the world both seen and unseen. The images and colors utilized in this series of prints mesh perfectly to communicate the artist's underlying concepts and passionate concern for the world around her.

"The images reference to water in all of its diverse forms. This basic building block of nature serves not only as an end by itself but also acts as a counterpoint to the other forms of nature that are captured and depicted. Inhabited by mysterious life forms conveyed with exactitude by the artist, water is a continuous presence in 'Osmosis.'

"The organic nature of the viscosity technique dovetails perfectly Samsel's chosen subject matter. The blending of the layers of ink creates pattern and color, complexities and patterns that mimic the complexities and patterns of nature.

"After the plate is prepared and wiped, a second color mixed with a considerable amount of oil is rolled onto the plate, leaving the color. Another roller with a stiff ink that does not adhere to the second color is then applied and the print is pulled. While the artists can create very similar prints of the same image from the plate, minute variations of ink, oil, and pressure do combine to make each viscosity print a unique image with great and subtle surface value.

"The viscosity print images capture and project the poetry of nature. For Samsel, they are metaphors for life, for our times, and for the feelings of fear and vulnerability present today. The viewer is permitted access to these personal images, images that touch and lead to the personal recesses of the imagination.

"The poetic nature of the work is at once intriguing and compelling. In this group of prints, images appear in various relationships and juxtapositions with one another, sometimes appearing to be totally different from when it was first encountered, but echoing and reinforcing the impression previously presented. The reward is in the exploration of the images, an ever evolving series of exciting visual sensations that stretch the mind and encourage further curiosity. Migration is about change and wonder as well as the fragile conditions that support life. "
